该漫画在通过集英社进行正式连载前，身为本漫画作者的北条司以试水温的心态与方式通过集英社的《周刊少年Jump》先后对外推出了城市猎人漫画系列的开篇之作。这两篇开篇之作分别是：《城市猎人—XYZ》以及《城市猎人—双刃剑》两篇试验性短篇漫画。因受到读者的高度好评，而终于在1985年到1991年期间正式长期连载于《周刊少年Jump》。
